This briefing has been prepared for councillors by the Local Government Association and Public Health England, to address questions that councillors may have on hepatitis and the viruses that cause it. It covers the essentials of hepatitis B and C; looks at how we can prevent them; explores the barriers to hepatitis prevention and control; treatment; considers what local authorities can do; and references some models of good practice.

This audit by Public Health England (PHE) and the Department of Health (DH) describes national best practice standards relating to hepatitis C services in prisons in England; compares hepatitis C services in a representative sample of 20 English prisons against these national best practice standards, and provides objective evidence and intelligence for commissioners and service providers to assist in the development and delivery of high quality hepatitis C services in prisons.

This document provides a case study of a Local Authority service in Shropshire, in which nurses within a drug and alcohol recovery service team are employed by the Shropshire Community Health Trust whilst working alongside the Local Authority staff to provide the health element of the service. It details the processes, outputs, outcomes and key considerations of a project aiming to improve awareness of HCV, improve uptake of HCV testing and hepatitis B vaccinations among at-risk recovery service clients, improve referral rates to secondary care and decrease 'did not attends' (DNAs).
