  • Evaluation of HepCATT intervention in primary care services
    A new study published this week in the British Journal of General Practice looked at a randomised control trial run in 45 primary care practices in south west England called the Hepatitis C Assessment Through to Treatment (HepCATT). The intervention aimed to increase case-finding, testing, and treatment of HCV through various initiatives in primary care, such as learning resources for staff, leaflets and information for patients, and software identifying patients with risk factors for hepatitis C infection.

  • Evaluation of the pilot provision of single use plastic water ampoules to people who inject drugs in Glasgow
    Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GG&C) has an estimated injecting population of 8862. There are 74 Injecting Equipment Provision (IEP) outlets across the area to meet the paraphernalia needs of this population. Since 2009 GG&C has provided a comprehensive package of paraphernalia, including needle choice, spoons, filters, citric acid and swabs. However, until the start of this pilot, water for injecting (WFI) was not available from any of the 62 pharmacy outlets. In fact prior to the pilot only 3 outlets provided WFI and this was in a glass ampoule form.

  • Evaluation of the South West Hepatitis C Partnership Pilot
    An evaluation of a project in which Addaction and The Hepatitis C Trust partnered together to support people with a history of injecting drug use who were engaged with Addaction services into hepatitis C treatment. This report evaluates the success of the pilot's three key interventions:

    * Peer education workshops

    * A 'buddy' scheme

    The Scottish Drugs Forum and Hepatitis Scotland carried out an evaluation of the effectiveness of injecting equipment providing services, noting barriers and recommendations to Tayside NHS. The report includes information on the provision of hepatitis C testing at injecting equipment providing services.

  • Eye of the Needle: United Kingdom Surveillance of Significant Occupational Exposures to Bloodborne Viruses in Healthcare Workers
    This report summarises data collected for healthcare workers (HCWs) occupationally exposed to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and hepatitis c (HCV) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It examines the types of exposures, the staff involved and the circumstances surrounding exposure episodes and uses such information to inform the development of national prevention policies and to monitor the implementation of current guidelines.   • Face It: Hepatitis C Best Practice - Developing a local hepatitis C strategy
    Dr Erika Duffell, Consultant in Health Protection at Greater Manchester Health Protection Unit (HPU) led a project on behalf of the local Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to improve services for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis C in Greater Manchester. A steering group produced a comprehensive needs assessment and evidence-based strategy, which convinced PCT commissioners to invest in services. So far, the programme has led to the development of outreach clinics in local drug services, the recruitment of extra medical and nursing staff to treat
